SONGWRITING COURSES

A eight week introductory course in writing and refining songwriting practice. The classes cover many elements of the popular song writing – including lyric writing, melody, harmony and chordal stucture, hooks and song form, as well as exploring methods for opening up your creativity and creating effective writing habits. The classes are open to anyone, but basic music theory knowledge is useful. You can benefit, whatever style you work with

ABOUT JEFF

Tommy Rando

Jeff Sheppard is a Melbourne based musician who has devoted over 10 years to producing, writing and performing. He is concerned with the world and is driven to make a difference with his soulful and uplifting lyrics. Jeff has performed on tours with international musicians Justin Timberlake and Lionel Ritchie, amongst many other local artists. The past few years has also seen him gain recognition for his song writing winning the International Peacedriven song writing award whilst competing against Grammy nominated artists and also receiving an LA music award for best male vocal. He is currently writing his third album; a smooth blend of soul and pop/adult contemporary that makes you feel good. "My writing has always been the core of why I love music so much. I hope that creating something from my heart can inspire others."

ABOUT SHAUN

Shaun Brown

Shaun Brown is a singer/songwriter best known as lead vocalist, harmonica player and lyricist for popular local blues/rock band Dirty York. Shaun has had a passion for music and songwriting since he was a boy. Growing up to the music of his parent era, Bruce Springsteen, Dire Straights and Elton John were amongst the soundtrack of his childhood. Since then, Shaun has developed a very extensive musical knowledge and appreciation applying his life experience and rich listening background to his own work. Dirty York have developed a strong following and have been commended for their dynamic live show, original songs and recordings by audiences and media alike.

  • Songwriting - How to set your goals
  • Songwriting approaches and styles
  • Lyrics - how to start, when to stop, how to refine
  • Melody - the life of the song
  • Harmony - the bones of the song
  • Song structures
  • Troubleshooting, re-writing, collaboration and other work practices

Class duration: 2 hours.

Each Week there will be practical exercises and you will complete at least one new original song during the course.

Week 4 More on lyrics and getting started on a melody. Deriving the music from the words.
Week 5 Melody and harmony. Song structure.
Week 6 Guest Songwriter - Shaun Brown (Dirty York)
Week 7 Troubleshooting and Fixing - refining and rewriting.
Week 8 Bringing it all together.
